RETIREMENT AND COMEBACK
He retired from competition in February 2016 after he was not included in the national team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but returned in 2017. "I was hurt when I didn't qualify for the 2016 Games, so I wanted to quit the sport. However I was motivated again on my way back to Japan from Rio de Janeiro where I worked as a commentator. I had a chance to talk with Chinese trampoline gymnast Dong Dong on the plane, and he told me, 'You must compete at the 2020 Olympic Games as it will be in Tokyo'. As I heard this from an Olympic gold medallist, it lit my fire." (nikkansports.com, 26 Oct 2018; sankei.com, 24 Jul 2018; SportsDeskOnline, 27 Apr 2018; mainichi.jp, 24 Feb 2016)
